7 Medley Sins was founded in 2025, but originally began in 2022 as a search for something spicy. When living in Japan in 2022/2023, Justin was missing spicy foods. If you've been to Japan, you know that it's fairly difficult to find spicy food. At the same time, Justin became intrigued by Japanese shichimi (7-spice blend), which is very common to find in most restaurants around Japan. Here began the journey of creating his own shichimi, but extra spicy.
In September, 2022, Justin was able to source some extremely spicy dried peppers in northern Japan from YouTuber/nature enthusiast;
Go North Japan. Once he returned to his home in Kyoto, he went out and bought spices that are commonly used in shichimi; sesame seeds, orange peel, ginger, and more. After a couple weeks of experimenting with a homemade shichimi, he finally had an end-product that he loved.
Justin always had his handcrafted shichimi in his pocket and was always willing to share. After introducing dozens of willing participants to his shichimi and seeing their love for it, he became curious about its potential for a business idea. Having worked in branding and digital marketing consultation for over a decade, he began to brainstorm business names that encompassed his vision of shichimi. He wanted the name to give a nod to Japanese shichimi, and ultimately used "7 Medley" as a jump off point. As you can imagine, once that came to mind, it was a quick path to "7 Medley Sins."
After coming up with the business name, Justin knew that opened the business up to a product line of 7 blends, which then began the journey of coming up with 6 blends to round out the 7 products.
PRIDE
PRIDE is considered the sin from which the other 6 sins arise, which is why it is a traditional Japanese shichimi tougarashi. Shichimi is the basis to which 7 Medley Sins was born, so it seemed fitting.
WRATH
WRATH is made with Carolina Reaper powder because we wanted it to symbolize a fiery fury.
SLOTH
SLOTH is a table top lazy man's blend — an all-purpose blend of spices — to symbolize laziness.
GREED
GREED is the only blend with more than 7 ingredients in order to symbolize the want or need for more.
LUST
LUST is a blend that is sweet, spicy, and floral in order to symbolize craving and desire.
GLUTTONY
GLUTTONY is a BBQ rub meant for gluttonous amounts of meat (like a brisket), in order to symbolize appetite and overindulgence.
ENVY
ENVY was crafted using combination of herbs and spices that aren't typical in the western world in order to symbolize the desire to be relevant and noticed like the others.
